Ethical and Sustainable Fashion: The Need of the 21st Century
Ethical and Sustainable Fashion: The Need of the 21st Century
The awareness for the need of ethical fashion developed 15 years ago, and the fashion industry only recently started getting awakened about it. It is a known fact that the fashion industry has been the second most polluting industry.

The processes of making the cloth ‘wearable’ and the leather ‘soft’ has caused more damage than can be imagined. So, the fashion designers and labels have started awareness programs that can help you recycle and reuse any damaged or faded garments which will, in turn, help in conserving our ecosystem.

Contribution of Younger Generations and Millennial

The upcoming generation is much more focused on saving our motherland and make it a greener place. About two years ago research found out that a product is likely to sell more if the product has an ethical mode of production. This has also resulted in more demand for eco-friendly products.

Ethical Mode of Production

Any process which recycles a product, water and uses natural dye is an example of the ethically made product. Apart from that any product which isn’t made of leather, fur and is animal-free also falls in the category of ethical product. The fact that the craftsmen or the end-labour are fairly paid is also a contributing factor towards making a product ethical in nature.

Discouraging Fast Fashion

Fast fashion means style available cheaply. This encourages the habit if ‘use and throw’ in consumers and creates tons and tons of wastage. But these days the fast fashion brands are discouraging this trend and moving to donation drives.

They are even asking their consumers to restyle, reuse, and exchange their clothing and accessories for fresh looks and long-lasting merchandise and apparel.

Reuse the Fashion

Many big and famous fashion brands have started campaigns to resale and rent their products so that people can use them more than once. An example of these types of dresses will be gowns and runway fashion.

Does this mean the Consumer has to pay more?

Well, this is a question everyone is very unsure about. A shirt that has to be sustainable for at least 3 years will be priced more than a shirt which will only last 6 months.  Therefore, everyone is very confused about this topic. However, we are expecting the brands to come up with something innovative and sustainable!

How does a Brand make sure Sustainability?

Since the fashion industry is a huge one, and so are the brands in it, it is challenging to be scrutinizing everything. However, the latest trend reported that the big brands are employing compliance with diverse marketplaces to make sure that all their sustainable and ethical modes of production are applied. These compliances with markets keep a check on the factories, and that’s how they maintain their ethical patterns of productions.

Key Takeaways

So, we can wrap up this blog post with the thought that the fashion industry is transforming with the need of the consumers and is turning towards the sustainability modules. However, there is more growth and responsibility to be expected in the near future. There are some brands which are promoting sustainability as well as ethical production, and all we require is more such responsible brands to take over our life’s runway!
